In Conversation with Dy, personal stylist

Getting to know our customers has always been part of what we do, and Dy is someone who has long felt like part of our extended Head Over Heels family. Over the years, we’ve shared many conversations in store, and her connection to us extends beyond that, with her daughter having once been part of our team and even designing our checkout counter, a detail that still remains today.

With a natural eye for style and a genuine love for fashion, Dy has now stepped into her own as a Christchurch-based personal stylist. Her approach is thoughtful and deeply personal, working closely with women to refine their wardrobes in a way that feels considered, confident, and true to them. From understanding body shape to navigating style at every stage, she brings a calm clarity to getting dressed each day.

    STYLE & CAREER

Behind every career is a story shaped by instinct, timing, and a desire for something more. While Dy has built a meaningful career as a school principal, she found herself drawn to a more creative outlet alongside it. Stepping into something new at this stage of life can feel daunting, but her journey is a reminder that following what excites you is always worth it. Her transition into styling feels both natural and inspiring, a reflection of passion meeting purpose.

Q: How would you describe your personal style in three words?
A: My personal style is relaxed, classic elegance.

Q: Why did you become a stylist?
A: I became a stylist because of my love for design and style. I want to encourage women to curate a cohesive wardrobe that fits their lifestyle, one that brings them joy and a sense of pleasure, not overwhelm.

Q: What do you love most about working with clients?
A: Watching my clients’ style confidence transform, which then transcends into their personal lives.

Q: What makes a shoe worth investing in?
A:  A great shoe can make or break an outfit. Consider the design and silhouette that suits your foot shape and your style personality, whether that’s a classic look or something more creative. Shoes should anchor an outfit and reflect your style. Adding a current shoe instantly elevates a look.

    CAPSULE SELECTIONS

On her latest visit to the boutique, we asked Dy to curate a small winter capsule, selecting four styles she would rely on throughout the season. Drawn to Ardour, she chose Hermannplatz, Ohlsdorf, Rho Fiera, and Loreen, a considered mix that balances everyday wearability with something a little more elevated. Each pair reflects her approach to dressing, thoughtful, wearable, and designed to work seamlessly into a well-edited wardrobe.

Q: Which of the four do you think will be your most worn?
A: I love the long black boot. It reflects my personal style beautifully. I will be wearing this with skirts and dresses for a long elongated look. I will team it up with my jeans and my trench and my tailored pants! This boot is so versatile.

Q: Your top tip for styling long boots?
A: When wearing a long boot, put on a long sock to help you slide into the boot with ease.

    A LITTLE BIT OF FUN

A quick-fire glimpse into Dy beyond the wardrobe. A few light-hearted questions that reveal her personality.

Q: First pair of shoes you fell in love with?
A: First pair of shoes I feel in love with were my Aunty Joan’s snake skin heels.. I was mesmerised by the height of the shoe and the pattern on them.

    Q: Coffee order?
A: Long black with a side of cream.

Q: Favourite way to spend a weekend?
A: Up early to walk around the beautiful Hagley park stopping for a coffee at Mayfair. I enjoy some time pottering around at home then out in the evening for dinner or enjoying some live theatre at the Court Theatre. We are spoilt for choice in Christchurch.

    Q: Favourite winter layering piece?
A: I am a fan of the coat. This winter I will be wearing my camel wool coat and layering it with a wool wrap for extra warmth and style.

    Q: Heels or flats?
A: This season I will be embracing heels and long boots with a heel.
